Traditional Holiday Festivities Near Your DC Metro Home

Traditional holiday festivities abound near your DC Metro home!  We’re so fortunate to live in a place that is steeped in our nation’s history, even more so during the holidays when many of our cherished historic places are decked out in seasonal finery.  Not only will these special celebrations and events put you in the Christmas spirit, but you’ll also get a glimpse of what the holidays may have been like many years ago.  Here are a few of our favorite places and programs.

Christmas at Mount Vernon

Curious about what holiday celebrations were like in George Washington’s day?  Then head to Mount Vernon where they deck the halls with festive greenery in the Mansion and themed Christmas trees on the estate.  Visitors are treated to a rare glimpse of the third floor which has been decorated just as the Washingtons would have when they were in residence.  Other fun events and programs include:

  • Chocolatiers demonstrating how chocolate was produced in the 18th century
  • Costumed friends and family of the Washingtons teaching dance or telling stories about Christmas at Mount Vernon in the Greenhouse every day from 3 – 3:30pm
  • Holiday performances by local musical groups on weekends at 2pm in the Education Center lobby
  • Chance to meet Aladdin the Camel and to see the National Thanksgiving Turkey after its official “presidential pardoning” at the White House.

Christmas at Mount Vernon runs daily through January 6th, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.  Mount Vernon is located at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon, VA, 22121.  To learn more about holiday festivities please click here or call (703) 780-2000.
