Alexandria, Virginia, offers a variety of Farmers Markets several days of the week – some even year-round! Old Town’s Market Square is full of life early each Saturday morning as is Del Ray’s market. The West End showcases their fresh goodies on Sundays and Upper King Street offers visitors and locals a chance to buy fresh produce and baked goods mid-week. Stop by one (or all!) of these local treasures and pick up fresh flowers for your hotel room or a jar of jam to take home as that perfect souvenir of your visit to Alexandria!
People who come to Alexandria on Saturday mornings find themselves in a busy plaza where local farmers and artists have been selling their products since 1753. Old Town Alexandria’s Market Square is thought to be one of the nation’s oldest continually operating farmer’s markets, serving as a primary way Alexandria residents have typically obtained their meat, dairy, fish, fruits and vegetables. George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at the Farmer’s Market! Today, the market offers Alexandrians a way to reconnect to the past, while participating in an ongoing local and national tradition.
The Del Ray Market is producer grown with fresh vegetables and fruits in season. All year round, this market offers meats, eggs, fresh pasta and sauces, Amish cheese, yogurt, bakery goods, eggs, jams and jellies, fancy nuts, and bakery goods.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market brings fresh, nutritious food to people of all income levels, provide an opportunity for local artisans and producers of goods to bring their wares to market, strive to reflect the diversity of the community, and improve the quality of life for Alexandria, Virginia, residents and visitors. It is part of an overall vision to expand and improve Four Mile Run Park and the surrounding neighborhood.
The market is located at the entrance to Four Mile Run Park, where every day, walkers stroll up the park and bikers whiz down the Four Mile Run Trail that connects to Crystal City, D.C., Shirlington and the Mount Vernon Trail. The market is managed by the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market Management Team, in cooperation with the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.
The Upper King Street Market offers area residents and commuters the opportunity to shop for fresh, locally grown produce, meat, dairy and bakery items.
Favored by families with children and pets, the West End Farmers Market offers an array of local, seasonal fruit and vegetables fresh from the farm: kohlrabi, bok choy, garlic scapes, pea shoots, squash blossoms, Saturn peaches, Asian pears and okra. Your feast in the park includes fair trade coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice and lemonade, fresh baked goods and artisanal cheeses.
